What age is best for newborn photography?
One of the most common questions I get asked by expecting parents is: when is the best time for a newborn photoshoot? It's a great question - and the timing really does make a difference to the kinds of images we can create together.
The simple answer is that the ideal time for a newborn photoshoot is usually within the first 5–14 days after birth. During this stage, babies are often sleepier, curl naturally into those adorable newborn poses, and are generally more settled throughout the session. However, every baby is different, and beautiful newborn photographs can be captured at various ages. If you're expecting and planning a newborn session in Leeds, here's everything you need to know about timing your baby's first photoshoot.
The sweet spot: 5–14 days old
The ideal window for newborn photography is between 5 and 14 days after birth. During this brief period, babies are at their sleepiest and most settled, which allows us to gently pose them in those classic curled-up positions that mimic how they rested in the womb.
Here's why this window works so well:
Deep, sound sleep - Newborns in this age range spend most of their time sleeping, making it easier to move them into different setups without waking them.
Natural flexibility - Their joints and limbs are still wonderfully supple, so they curl naturally into those adorable poses.
Tend to settle more easily between photographs
That "brand new" look -There's something irreplaceable about photographing a baby who still looks and feels utterly fresh to the world.
What if we miss that window?
Life with a newborn is unpredictable. If your baby arrives early, needs extra time in hospital, or you simply didn't get round to booking in those first two weeks - don't worry. Beautiful photographs are absolutely still possible.
Babies between 3 and 6 weeks sleep less, are stronger and more alert, which means we get more eye contact and awake shots. The session might take a little longer, and we may focus more on simple, more relaxed poses. We might need to opt for more wrapped up set-ups as well if the baby is very alert.
Is it too late if my baby is over 6 weeks old?
Absolutely not.
Many families contact photographers after their baby arrives and worry they've left it too late. At 6-8 weeks old, babies often begin showing more personality. They may:
Look directly at the camera
Make early smiles
Show more expression
Enjoy cuddles with parents and siblings
These sessions become less about posed newborn images and more about documenting your baby's unique character and family connections.
What if my baby arrives early?
Babies born prematurely are often photographed based on their developmental stage rather than their actual birth date. In many cases, photographers will recommend waiting until your baby is home, settled, and thriving before scheduling the session.
Every situation is unique, and your photographer can advise on the best timing for your baby.
When should you book?
I always recommend getting in touch during your second or third trimester. This gives us time to pencil in a provisional date around your due date, and I'll keep my diary flexible for when baby actually arrives. Once you let me know your little one is here, we'll confirm a session within that golden 5-14 day window, when possible.
