How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session: Tips from a Leeds Newborn Photographer
Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most precious milestones. As a professional newborn photographer with 7 years of experience, I know how important it is to capture these fleeting early days. A successful newborn session doesn’t just happen—it requires a little preparation to ensure you get beautiful, timeless images that you’ll cherish forever.
1. Book Early to Secure Your Ideal Provisional Date
Newborn sessions are best held when your baby is between 5–20 days old—they are still very sleepy and curl naturally, which allows for those classic, dreamy poses. It’s best to book while you’re still pregnant to guarantee availability around your due date. I normally book a provisional date that suits you best, around a week or two after the due date, and we can always change it later, if the baby decides to arrive early or late.
2. Keep Baby Comfortable and Sleepy
If you’re nursing, I would suggest avoiding caffeine, citrus acidic foods & drinks, and gassy vegetables for an entire day leading up to your session.
If possible, try to keep you baby up an hour or so before the session. Try giving a baby or playing with them.
Dress your baby in easy-to-remove clothing.
Feed them right before the session to encourage sleepiness.
Bring extra milk if bottle-feeding, as babies often get hungrier during longer sessions.
3. What to Bring to Your Session
Most professional studios provide wraps, outfits, and props, but you’ll still want to bring:
Spare nappies and wipes
burp cloth
A pacifier (if you’re not opposed to using it) - it can be a lifesaver!
Personal items you’d love included, such as a special blanket or toy
4. Plan for Family and Sibling Shots
If you’d like photos with parents or siblings, choose neutral clothing in soft tones. Avoid bright patterns or logos—simple outfits keep the focus on your baby and create timeless images.
It’s always a good idea to bring some entertainment for the siblings, and snacks for the whole family - newborn sessions can be long, up to 4h!
5. Relax and Trust the Process
Every baby is different. Some sleep through the whole session, while others may need frequent breaks for feeding or cuddles. An experienced newborn photographer knows how to safely soothe and pose your baby, so you can simply relax and enjoy the moment.
